It isn’t a widely known fact, but chocolate is actually good for heart health and it can benefit your cardiovascular system in many different ways. Several studies over the years have found a strong connection between chocolate consumption and heart health as a result of the large amount of antioxidants in it, its ability to lower blood pressure, and other beneficial health effects. Chocolate helps reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol as well, and dark chocolate in particular has shown to be particularly beneficial for heart health compared to milk chocolate or other types of chocolate.
A study published in 2012 found that dark chocolate can help with heart failure
One study that the University of California San Diego School of Medicine performed found that patients with heart failure benefited from eating dark chocolate on a regular basis. The study found that a flavonoid in dark chocolate improved mitochondrial structure in patients who had type 2 diabetes and advanced heart failure. The study focused on 5 sick patients who had extensive damage to their skeletal and heart muscle muscle mitochondria. The study found that after eating dark chocolate bars and drinks that provided 100 mg of flavonoids, they found that the mitochondria levels had returned to normal or near normal for the patients for their heart and skeletal muscle.
Remember that not all types of chocolate are healthy
Although dark chocolate in particular is a healthy option to improve your cardiovascular system, not every type of chocolate will have this effect. Most processed chocolate products have very few if any flavonoids and are high in dairy and sugar. These foods won’t really benefit your heart health and can actually make you sicker if you aren’t careful with their intake.
Stick to dark chocolate if you want to improve your heart health, and the closer it is to raw unsweetened chocolate the better. Dark chocolate can be a delicious treat that you can indulge in on a regular basis as low as you find a low sugar variety, and it can strengthen your heart muscle and provide other incredible health benefits.
