According to the, GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.


When it comes to heart health, high blood pressure and heart disease, GMOs are no good at all. And here at, it’s our responsibility to not only educate, but inform and warn our readers, and our clients, about anything that might cause increased risk to their health – particularly their heart health.

On May 19th, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) called on “Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community, and the public to avoid GM (genetically modified) foods when possible and provide educational materials concerning GM foods and health risks.”[1] They called for a moratorium on GM foods, long-term independent studies, and labeling. AAEM’s position paper stated, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. They conclude, “There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation,” as defined by recognized scientific criteria. “The strength of association and consistency between GM foods and disease is confirmed in several animal studies.”


Healthy Diet

Heart disease and cardiovascular health can be dramatically impacted by your diet. It’s not just GMOs that you want to avoid, it’s processed foods, fast foods, and modified foods of any kind. This is easier said than done, especially in today’s marketplace when it’s incredibly difficult to determine what foods are from what sources and injected with what chemicals.


However, there are some brands and stores that you can choose to shop at to better your health:


Whole Foods – if you’re looking for healthy, organic, natural, non GMO produces, this is where you want to shop.


USDA Organic – you’ll want to seek out the USDA seal on products. The USDA National Organic Standards prohibit the use of GMOs.


Seal of Approval – choose products that have been verified non-GMO by a 3rd-party, like the Non-GMO Project.


Avoid – Avoid products made with ingredients that might be derived from GMOs (see list). The eight GM food crops are Corn, Soybeans, Canola, Cottonseed, Sugar Beets, Hawaiian Papaya (most) and a small amount of Zucchini and Yellow Squash.


Sugar If a non-organic product made in North American lists “sugar” as an ingredient (and NOT pure cane sugar), then it is almost certainly a combination of sugar from both sugar cane and GM sugar beets.
