Here at EraseDisease we focus most of our attention on individuals in heart disease risk categories, mostly older, with a history of heart disease, probable bad habits, but are looking for natural alternatives to get heart healthy. According to a study of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, American kids eat too much sugar and salt, they don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, and far too many are overweight. The article goes on to say that these children are being set up for early heart disease.

The Study

In this study, just under 9,000 children between the ages of 2 and 11 years old were surveyed. According to the study, fewer than one percent of the children had four or five of the main components of a healthy diet, eating four and a half cups or more, fruits and vegetables each day, three servings of whole grains each day, two servings of fish a week, minimal amounts of sugar, and below 1500 milligrams of sodium per day.

 

What is most shocking about this study is that 40% of the 9,000 kids already had high or worrying cholesterol levels. The article on nbcnews.com stated that ultrasound examinations of children as young as 10 have shown they can have arteries that are already is clogged as those in some middle age people.

 

The Silver Lining

You’re probably looking for the silver lining in this article. Here at EraseDisease we also are always looking for the silver lining, and in this particular instance the positive aspect is that as these children grow older and begin to understand what a healthy diet is they can dramatically cut their risk of heart disease and stroke by simply eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, and foods that are low in saturated fat and low in fatty meat.
