We do what we can to promote a healthy lifestyle, from encouraging exercise and healthy lifestyle habits to promoting Cardio Juvenate, our L-arginine supplement that has helped so many to lower high blood pressure naturally. Just the other day I spent a great deal of time focusing on the importance of personalizing a heart healthy strategy, and today I want to talk about the importance of personalizing your heart healthy diet with the foods you love to eat. For me, it’s avocado….

Avocado Lowers Bad Cholesterol

An amazing research study has been published in the The Journal of the American Heart Association and conducted by researchers at Pennsylvania State University which states that an avocado a day can lower bad cholesterol. Well, as you can imagine, for me this is wonderful news!

One of the keys to being successful at lowering blood pressure and cholesterol naturally is the ability to still do what you love and eat what you love, but in a way that does not negatively impact your end goal of a healthier heart.

Forty-five participants took part in the study in which the individuals were separated into three groups. Of those groups, one set was eating a low-fat diet that included lots of fruits, low-fat dairy, poultry, whole grains and small amounts of red meat.

The other two diets were moderately high in fat, with about 34 percent of total calories consumed per day coming from fat. The types of foods and meals were similar to the low-fat diet, but included more nuts and oils.

One of the moderately high-fat diets included an avocado a day.

According to NPR, at the end of the study, the researchers found that the avocado diet led to significant reductions in LDL cholesterol, compared with the other two diets.

To put the difference in perspective, the avocado diet decreased LDL cholesterol about 14 milligrams per deciliter of blood. Compare that with a decrease of about 7 mg/dL for the low-fat diet, and about a 8 mg/dl drop from the moderate-fat diet.

“I was surprised to see the added benefit [of the avocado],” Penny Kris-Etherton, a nutrition scientist at Penn State and the lead author of the study, tells us.” It’s something in the avocado” other than just the fat composition, she says.

Eat What You Love

Getting heart healthy doesn’t have to be a negative thing. So many of the individuals that I work with start their journey on a sour note, until they learn how to balance their love of food with their blood pressure and cholesterol. Cardio Juvenate can be an incredibly beneficial supplement in these situations.

I love avocado, but just as this study seems to point out the positives for lowering bad cholesterol, the large amount of calories that avocadoes can add to your overall calorie intake can be detrimental. And hence we come to the balancing act. If you have questions about how you can maintain a healthy heart with supplements and still eat the things you love, contact us today.
