There are two chemicals involved in the body during exercise – cortisol and endorphins. In terms of heart health, increased cortisol equals increased heart disease risk.
Cortisol – Cortisol is directly related to stress, and when the body becomes stressed cortisol is released, which inflames and damages our organs, including the heart. Exercise burns cortisol. By burning cortisol, you decrease your risk for heart disease while simultaneously improving your mood and lowering stress levels.
Endorphins – Endorphins are our body’s natural drug. In fact, many researchers, physicians and scientists claim that endorphins are stronger than many drugs. Endorphins are hormone molecules that enter the brain’s neurons and park on receptors that normally send pain-signaling molecules back to other parts of the brain. In laymen’s terms, endorphins block pain and improve mood. Exercise releases this hormone.
But Wait, There’s More…
Exercise also triggers the body to release BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), a protein produced by the body to repair memory neurons. Essentially, as you exercise you’re body is releasing this protein and your mind is becoming more clear. Scientists have found that it’s because of this release of BDNF you feel more at easer and clear-headed after a workout, also contributing to a happier, healthier you.
