“We estimated that 3.3 [percent] of deaths could be prevented if all participants had a processed meat consumption of less than 20 [grams] per day,” the researchers wrote in the study. The Atlantic pointed out that 20 grams of processed meat is the equivalent of a “matchbook-sized portion” of sausage. Processed meat was defined in the study by “meat that had something added to it.”

 

Now, studies like this have been conducted in the past. According to a 2012 study published in Circulation, an strong association was shown between process red meat such as hot dogs, bacon, sausage and col cuts was linked to increased risks of heart disease and diabetes. In this study, processed meat was defined as “any meat preserved by smoking, curing, or salting, or any meat containing chemical preservatives such as nitrates.”
