There are many ways in which your heart can be adversely affects, with a number of conditions causing distress and disease to this super important organ. However, there are some things that can cause heart disease or a heart attack without you even realizing it, such as hip and knee replacements in people older than 60. These procedures are often medically necessary to guarantee mobility and mitigate pain and yet, they can have other devastating effects on your health. Doing what you can to lessen those heart-unhealthy effects, including reaping the benefits of arginine and getting plenty of rest and exercise, is key to ensuring that you don’t suffer the ill effects of replacing two very important parts of your body.

The Research

The findings are the result of a study published in the “Archives of Internal Medicine,” which reviewed the medical records of more than 95,000 people in the country of Denmark who had one surgery or the other in a 10 year period. One in each of the 200 people suffered a heart attack in the six weeks following the surgery, making them 25 times more likely than the average person to sustain this issue. This could be due, in part, to the person’s age and the stress that surgery placed on their heart.  However, while there is no way to tell whose heart can stand up to surgery and whose cannot, there are steps you can take to reinforce your body’s most important muscle.

The benefits of arginine supplements can’t be discounted in situations like this, when the heart needs to be reinforced to counteract the stress caused on the body after such a major surgery. If your heart is in the best possible condition, that may mitigate some of the risk associated with surgical procedures and ensuing complications, including heart attacks. Arginine supplements increase the circulation of blood throughout the heart, making it pump more efficiently and effectively.

This is why the benefits of arginine apply to this situation because a stronger heart means less of a chance of an attack down the line, particularly after a major procedure, such as a knee or hip replacement. Moreover, taking this supplement, as well as getting plenty of exercise and maintaining good nutritional habits, helps to ensure that you are in peak physical condition overall and can manage any other complications that may come your way as a result of the surgery.
