It is hard to believe that teenagers, who are in the prime of their youth and seemingly feel and act invincible, can suffer the effects of poor nutritional and health habits. However, a new study shows that this is, in fact, the case. According to the results garnered from this new study, teens struggling with obesity problems can suffer from heart-related challenges, particularly if those problems persist over time. There are ways to combat this issue, including taking supplements and reaping the benefits of l-arginine and other heart-healthy additions to a balanced diet and regimen. However, the first step is recognizing the problem.

 

The study, still in its preliminary stages, showed that because obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease, obese teens are starting to show decreased levels of heart function and heart damage at an earlier age than previously seen. The study looked at 97 teens, 32 of which were at a healthy weight, 33 of which were overweight and 32 of which were obese. It showed that of those that are obese, their hearts had sustained damage with thicker walls than those at a healthier weight.

 

There must be additional studies to determine the extent to which this damage occurs. There are steps that can be taken, however, to mitigate these effects. For example, taking the amino acid supplement l-arginine can help obese teens to gain the energy needed to be more active and thereby drop some of their excess weight. Moreover, another one of the benefits of l-arginine is that it promotes good heart health by increasing the blood flow and circulation of blood around the heart. Researchers cautioned against reading too much into the results of the study, saying the results were still preliminary. However, by incorporating healthy supplements into their diets and cultivating better nutritional habits, obese teens can reap the benefits of l-arginine and other good habits, resulting in better overall health. This is key as the U.S. continues to battle the obesity epidemic and promote healthier habits.
